The Story of Jesus and the Bird On Top

The bird on top is brown and big. It glides from one fence post to the next. It sees the next fence post then opens its wings and kicks off with its legs. The bird scoops its legs under itself and brings them up and lands on the post. A woman watches the bird from a window across the street. She brings her hand to her mouth and catches something trying to come out. She swallows. The bird glides from one fence post to the next. There is very little fence between posts. The woman in the window gasps. Jesus on the cross gasps.

When the woman in the window was young she was best friends with Jesus on the cross. She brought her school bag with her to visit and tied ribbons into Jesus's hair, painted his toenails different colors. The brown bird made a nest in a hollow of the cross near the top. Part of the nest is made from Jesus's hair and the girl's ribbons. The girl would always try to sell imaginary lemonade to Jesus. Jesus would look up, and then down and his eyes would bunch up and he would cry. The girl would cry and drop the cups and spill imaginary lemonade into the warm grass. At some point the girl stopped bringing things to Jesus. Blood came out of everything. A million little brown birds rocket out of the hollow.
